It's time to meet another of First Aid for Dogs students. Ingrida attended our February First Aid for Dogs course in Tongham, Surrey. Let's find out a bit more about her:

Name: Ingrida Valuckyte

Lives: Peterborough

What do you do? I am training to be a Vet nurse.

How long have you been a vet nurse? Currently I am only training to be a vet nurse but I am trained as a Veterinary Care assistant.

What made you want to become a vet nurse? I wanted to be a vet nurse because not many people know what vet nurses do and I want to help the pet owner to understand our job of vet nurse and understand this role as being the owner what to do and how to care for the animal.

Have you always been an vet nurse? I was training to be a Veterinary Care Assistant

What’s your favourite part of your job? Helping pets to live their normal life without pain and able to help them as much as I can.

How do you keep your skills up to date? Do you have any favourite websites that you use? I attend vet training practice for couple of weeks to do my training to get my skills and knowledge up to date, but also I just use any websites for any information.

Why did you think learning first aid for dogs was important to you? That I could perform first aid for any dogs in the street and not to be afraid to help them and having knowledge of first aid helps you to feel more professional when you deal with any first aid situations.

What was the most valuable piece of information your gained from the first aid for dogs course? I have gained a good information about emergency muzzle and how to do chest compressions.

What qualities do you think are important in a vet nurse? I think that you need to be more than just a vet nurse and be able to work independently and take responsibilities yourself. Able to work under pressure as well. And always be honest with the clients because you need to gain the clients trust in you.

Have you learnt anything surprising about dogs from working with them? I found that dogs are very intelligent and they will show their characteristics but you need to be able to show them that I am the boss. Dogs will also behave differently if you will be not treating them right the first time as they remember the people very good and who have hurt them and they will not let that person to touch the dog again ever who been treating the dog wrong.

What’s your top tip for caring for dogs? The owner should know the main purposes for keeping the dog. Able to feed the correct food and the correct amount. Able to do any first aid for their own dogs and knowing simple stuff that can help your dog’s life. Able to train correctly and look after the dogs and providing the freedom.

Have you had an amusing experiences in your work as a vet nurse? I had experiences of dealing with some angry or upset clients which is hard but you need to stay professional and be confident.

Which dog would you most like to walk or which famous person’s dog would you most like to walk?** I would like to walk the Gordon setter and Dogue de Bordeaux.
